Meet the Winners: Langkawi International Airport

Langkawi International Airport

While conversations began at regional events, they’re far from over. In our Routes Revisited series, the voices of our award winners, exhibitors and Routes 360 members, highlight their achievements, insights and ambitions for the future. These conversations offer space for reflection and renewed perspective, sustaining the dialogue as we build momentum towards Routes World 2026.

Langkawi International Airport (LGW), operated by Malaysia Airports, reigned successful in the Under 5 Million passenger category during the Routes Asia 2026 Awards.

At the core of LGK’s success is its ability to convert tourism momentum into sustained traffic growth. In 2025, the airport handled 2.92 million passengers—an 11.7% year-on-year increase, reflecting both recovery strength and structural demand for Langkawi as a leisure destination.

A key driver behind this growth has been the use of major international events to boost visibility and traffic. Hosting Routes Asia 2024 and events like the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) helped position the island directly in front of airline decision-makers.

At the same time, Langkawi has focused on positioning itself as a premium destination. Working closely with the Langkawi Development Authority, Malaysia Airports has used tourism data and passenger insights to design targeted incentives for airlines.

The launch of a Langkawi to Tashkent route shows the airport is expanding into new markets, while charter services from Warsaw and Chengdu demonstrate growing long-haul appeal.

Across its wider network, Malaysia Airports has also been expanding rapidly, adding multiple new airlines and routes. Recent developments have seen four international airlines join Malaysia Airports’ network with Shandong Airlines, AeroDili and Air Algerie launching routes to Kuala Lumpur and Chongqing Airlines connecting China to Penang.

In addition, seven new routes were introduced across key gateways, including Jinan to Kuala Lumpur, Chongqing to Kota Kinabalu, Wuxi to Kuala Lumpur, and Qingdao to Penang.

Hosting Routes Asia 2024 proved to be a defining moment for Malaysia Airports and Langkawi. With over 110 airlines in attendance, LGW has seen the impact extended well beyond the event itself. According to Malaysia Airports’ chief airports officer, Bryan Thompson, the exposure translated into new route opportunities, stronger airline relationships and increased international interest in both Langkawi and Malaysia’s wider airport network.

Langkawi benefited from heightened exposure, supported by a total traffic movement of 2,918,511 passengers, a 11.7% increase in passenger numbers compared to the previous year, further reinforcing its appeal alongside key gateways such as Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

Thompson said: “We are seeing continued growth in airline connectivity. In 2024, 12 new airlines commenced operations across our airports, including international carriers such as flydubai operating Dubai–Langkawi, marking the first Middle Eastern airline into Langkawi, and IndiGo launching Bengaluru–Langkawi services. This was followed by a further 15 new airlines in 2025, reflecting sustained network growth and recovery strength.”

Thompson identifies a notable improvement in Chinese carrier presence across the group’s network, rising from 10 in 2024 to 15 in April 2026, further strengthening Malaysia’s position in key Asia-Pacific source markets.

Looking ahead, Malaysia Airports is targeting high-potential inbound and outbound markets. China remains a key focus, particularly secondary and tertiary cities, where there is growing outbound demand. The airport group is leveraging Malaysia’s visa-free policy for Chinese nationals to stimulate travel and encourage greater route development from these emerging markets.

India is proving to be another strategic priority given the significant untapped demand for international travel. Malaysia Airports is simultaneously encouraging additional Indian carriers to commence operations while expanding frequencies on existing routes. Across ASEAN, the group plan to capitalize on strong regional demand, with a focus on increasing services and strengthening links between key cities.

Thompson also identified Europe an important growth market, with continued efforts to strengthen direct connectivity and attract new or additional services from key hubs: “We are particularly focused on increasing flight frequencies, expanding charter operations and improving network links to support both leisure and business travel demand between Malaysia and major European cities.”

Having been crowned the winners of the Under 5 Million Passenger category at the Routes Asia Awards, Thompson said: “This represents significant industry recognition of Langkawi International Airport’s performance in route development, marketing, and airline partnership support. This award reflects Malaysia Airports’ continued commitment throughout 2025 to strengthening partnerships with our airlines through proactive collaboration, data-driven insights, structured incentives and operational support. It also acknowledges the effectiveness of our airport and destination marketing efforts in driving connectivity growth and enhancing Langkawi’s visibility as a key leisure destination.”

Thompson added: “Overall, this achievement serves as a strong validation of the airport’s strategic efforts to enhance connectivity and underscores its growing role in supporting tourism and aviation development within Malaysia, while also further underscoring its sustained service quality, as demonstrated by LGK’s five-year streak of ASQ Awards.”

Having met with over 30 airlines during the 2026 edition of the event, Thompson evaluated Malaysia Airport’s experience as positive and productive: “The majority of discussions with airlines were centred on growth rather than recovery, reflecting a more confident outlook across the industry. We also observed strong interest from carriers exploring new markets as part of their expansion strategies.”
