Our Route Opportunities feature explores the latest unserved and underserved routes promoted through Routes 360, providing supporting information for airline network planners to consider and capitalize on.

Marseille Provence Airport (MRS), located in France's second-largest city, served more than 10.8 million passengers in 2023. The airport connects to more than 130 nonstop destinations across 35 countries and recently opened a brand-new terminal in June 2024.

Southern France, the country's second-largest tourist region after Paris, attracts 30 million visitors annually. In addition to inbound travel, MRS benefits from a large catchment area of over 6.5 million people with both economic and tourism interests.

One of the airport's recent successes is the new intercontinental route to Shanghai, launched on July 2. Operated by China Eastern Airlines, the 3X-weekly service facilitates further connections to Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.

For the summer 2024 schedule, Ryanair introduced five new destinations—Limoges, Reggio di Calabria, Tirana, Wroclaw, and Zagreb—bringing the total number of routes it serves from MRS to 62.

Transavia France also enhanced connectivity with a 2X-weekly direct route to Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN), starting June 6, 2024 as well as Antalya (AYT), Biarritz (BIQ), Heraklion (HER) and Palermo (PMO). In the past year, the airline launched services to Bordeaux, Dubai, Hurghada in Egypt, and Yerevan in Armenia. The Yerevan route holds particular significance due to Marseille's Armenian population, which exceeds 80,000.

In 2023, MRS also welcomed Ryanair's route to Amman in October and Austrian Airlines' inaugural service to Vienna Airport (VIE) in March.

As a member of Routes 360, the only digital platform dedicated to route development, MRS has uploaded multiple route opportunities to its profile to close connectivity gaps and further serve VFR travelers.
