JAL tests new biofuel

Japan Airlines has announced it will be the first airline to conduct a biofuel flight powered by refined camelina.

The flight will take place in early 2009 with a Boeing 747-300 operating on a 50-50 mix of biofuel and kerosene; it also represents the final stage in biofuel's operational performance capabilities and potential commercial viability.

"Our feedstock selection was based on firm sustainability criteria designed to avoid the mistakes of preceding biofuel generations," said Tim Rahmes, Boeing’s biofuels programme manager.
