IndiGo To Become Noida’s Launch Carrier

IndiGo is set to become the first carrier to serve Noida International Airport (DXN), a new greenfield airport under construction near the Indian city of Jewar.

A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the airline and airport that will see the two parties work together to develop and strengthen air connectivity within India’s northern Uttar Pradesh state.

The first phase of DXN will be operational by the end of 2024, featuring one 3,900-m (12,795-ft.) runway and one 100,000-m2 (1,076,390-ft.2) terminal with the capacity to handle traffic of 12 million passengers annually. After completion of a fourth phase, it will have the capacity to manage 70 million passengers per year.

“Our operations at [DXN] will provide the people of Uttar Pradesh with seamless connectivity across our unparalleled network,” IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers says. “We look forward to the inauguration of the new airport in 2024.”

IndiGo serves seven airports in Uttar Pradesh at present, flying to Agra, Allahabad, Bareilly, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, Lucknow and Varanasi. The new airport at Jewar is also designed to provide an alternative for New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, located about 75 mi. away.

In October, Aviation Week reported that the government of Uttar Pradesh in North India plans to develop an MRO hub near DXN. As a next step, the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority, which handles infrastructure near the airport, is preparing to issue a global tender for an MRO facility, as part of the airport's second-phase expansion.

DXN is being developed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International.
