The new airport, designed by architect Luis Vidal (who designed Heathrow Airport T2) and SF-based Gensler, will include a new adaptable terminal leading to a modern check-in concourse, new security area, 51-gate terminal and baggage-claim system.

An expansive curb leads to the ticketing hall, where travelers will find airline ticket counters with technology upgrades to make checking in for a flight faster with less contact.

Once through security, passengers will find two outdoor terraces where they can experience the woodlands, valleys, rock formations and other landscapes reflective of the region.

Departure terminals at the airport will have vaulted ceilings, ample windows for natural light and greenery.

Two additional outdoor terraces, as well as updated restrooms and concessions, will also be located pre-security for Pittsburgh’s “meeters and greeters.”

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) has revealed renderings of plans for its $1.4 billion Terminal Modernization Program, and will break ground in fall 2021.

Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024, with opening in early 2025. 

Key design features of the new terminal and parking facilities are centered on elements of nature and sustainability, technology and innovation.

Airlines signaled their support for the project by signing a new seven-year operating agreement that allows the Airport Authority to secure long-term bond financing to build the 700,000-sq. ft. terminal. The new terminal consolidates ticketing, security checkpoints, baggage claim, and a multi-modal complex that includes a new 3,300-space parking garage, rental car facilities, parking lots and roadways.
