From The Floor: Chongqing Jiangbei Accelerates Infrastructure Development

Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG) is poised for significant growth as it accelerates the construction of Terminal 3B and a fourth runway, set to be operational in the first quarter of 2025.

These developments are crucial for expanding the airport's capacity to handle increasing passenger traffic, which is expected to reach 50 million by the end of this year, according to Hou Wei, general manager of CKG.

“This expansion will enable us to meet the demand of up to 80 million passengers annually,” he said. “The new terminal and runway will enhance our operational efficiency, accommodating 1.2 million tonnes of cargo and 580,000 aircraft movements.”

In parallel with these infrastructure enhancements, the airport has also secured several new international routes. Since the beginning of the year, service has opened or resumed on 10 routes, including nonstop flights to major cities such as Seattle, Milan, Moscow, Jakarta, and Hanoi. The airport has also increased service to destinations like Singapore, Seoul, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur.

With a strategic focus on positioning Chongqing as a major aviation hub, the airport is also targeting unserved and underserved markets to further boost its growth. Currently, flights to South America and Africa have yet to resume, presenting significant opportunities for expansion.

It is also aiming to attract more international airlines, particularly focusing on high-growth areas in Europe and Southeast Asia. “We warmly welcome more airlines to open routes in Chongqing, which will further enhance our connectivity and support our economic development goals,” Hou says.

Additionally, the airport is looking toward the future with plans for Bishan Airport, Chongqing’s second international airport, which has received site selection approval from the Civil Aviation Administration of China. Positioned as an air cargo hub and regional aviation center, Bishan is expected to complement the existing CKG, further enhancing the region's aviation capabilities.
