In 2007, Leipzig/Halle Airport celebrated its 80th anniversary and is thus one of Germany's oldest airports. Since 1990 the airport has evolved step by step into one of Europe's most modern airports that distinguishes itself with a high-performance infrastructure and an exemplary connection of rail, road and air. In June 2003 the multi-functional Central Terminal was completed joining the airport railway station, the central check-in area, the multi-storey car park and diverse service and shopping facilities. The Central Terminal has an annual capacity of 4.5 million passengers. Due to its modular structure as well as its central location between the two runways the Central Terminal can be extended to accommodate a capacity of seven million passengers per year in a timely and need-driven fashion.
The commissioning of the new South Runway in July 2007 provides Leipzig/Halle Airport with a parallel runway system allowing simultaneous take-offs and landings on the two 3,600-metre-long runways.
DHL
The decision of Deutsche Post World Net to use Leipzig/Halle Airport as its European DHL hub clearly showed that the airport's shareholders and management had quite rightly focused on a long-term strategy. The finalisation of the contract between DHL and Leipzig/Halle Airport in September 2005 created the basis for a long-lasting cooperation turning the central German airport into one of the most important cargo transhipment centres in Europe. Since 2008 around 50 DHL cargo aircraft have been using Leipzig/Halle Airport per night.
Aerologic
Leipzig/Halle Airport is the home base for a new cargo carrier, AeroLogic. The establishment of the cargo airline by DHL Express and Lufthansa Cargo will boost Leipzig/Halle's position as the most important logistics location in the region. AeroLogic will further increase the airfreight and express business to and from Asia. By the end of 2010, the AeroLogic fleet will grow to a total of eight Boeing 777F aircraft.
TIACA
Top representatives of the international air cargo industry to meet in Leipzig in 2010
Leipzig/Halle Airport will host The International Air Cargo Association's (TIACA) Executive Summit and Annual General Meeting on May 16-18, 2010.
TIACA brings together top decision-makers in the international logistics and air cargo industry. It is a worldwide organization that serves a membership which includes all major segments of the air cargo and logistics industry: airlines, airports, forwarders, ground handlers, air cargo carriers, courier and express companies, general sales agents, brokers, shippers, and educational institutions.
During the three-day event, topics such as security regulations for air cargo screening in Europe and the United States, supply chain management, global trade and how it has been affected by the economic crisis, or commercial viability of alternative fuels will be discussed.
The top-class meetings will be held at Leipzig/Halle Airport, in The Westin Leipzig Hotel and in the Porsche Customer Service Center. More than 200 attendees are expected in Leipzig in 2010.
2009 TRAFFIC DEVELOPMENT
Leipzig/Halle Airport was able to set a new freight record. The airport had handled 524,082.7 tonnes by the end of the year. This represents an increase of 18.5 percent over the figures for the same period in the previous year.
This ongoing growth enabled the airport to assert its position to a significant degree despite the economic difficulties and it was able to further consolidate its ranking as the third most important logistics airport in Germany.
Passenger numbers at the airport declined slightly by 1.7 percent to 2,421,382. But the airport was able to increase traffic volumes by 0.4 percent to 60,150 take-offs and landings.
