The Civil Aviation Authority of Uganda and Entebbe International Airport will play host to this year’s Routes Africa event. Uganda has Bilateral Air Service Agreements with thirty three countries and sixteen international airlines have scheduled operations to and from Entebbe International Airport serving fourteen destinations which also offer connection to the rest of the world.
The geographical location of Uganda in the heart of Africa, gives Entebbe International Airport, which is situated 40 kilometres (around an hour’s drive) to the main city Kampala, greater advantage for hub and spoke operations especially in the Great Lakes region. Amongst the international airlines that currently operate to Entebbe are; British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Kenya Airways, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Qatar Airways, South African Airways, Nasair, Egyptair, Ethiopian Airlines, Precision Air, and Turkish Airlines.
Uganda, the Pearl of Africa as it is commonly known, is located in the heart of the Great African high plateau that rolls from the Ethiopian highlands towards Southern Africa. It is bordered by Kenya in the East, Tanzania and Rwanda in the south. Ecologically, Uganda is where the East African savannah meets the West African jungle, in its uniquely lush pastures one can observe lions prowling the open plains in the morning and track chimpanzees through the rainforest undergrowth the same afternoon, then the next day navigate tropical channels teeming with hippos and crocodiles before setting off into the misty mountains to visit the majestic mountain gorillas. Uganda is also blessed with a vast bird population of more than 1,000 species.
Uganda’s Political and economic environment has been stable for the last 26 years, with the economy growing at an average of more 5% per annum. Last year, the country was ranked as the world’s most preferred tourism destination by respected travel guide specialist Lonely Planet which highlights the country as the place where Savannah meets the vast East African lakes and where snow-capped mountains bear down on sprawling jungles.
