Brussels Airlines Adds Mombasa to African Network

Belgian national carrier Brussels Airlines is to introduce a second destination in Kenya as it expands its African network to 21 points. From November 2, 2012 the Star Alliance member will inaugurate a weekly flight between Brussels and the East African coastal city of Mombasa. The airline expects mainly leisure demand on the route to the city, a popular tourist destination with travellers from Europe.

Brussels Airlines has been serving the Kenyan market since it was formed following the collapse of Sabena in the early 1990s. The airline offers regular flights to the capital Nairobi using its Airbus A330-300s, a route with an estimated O&D demand of just under 30,000 passengers a year. Around 7,000 passengers a year currently fly between Brussels and Mombasa, mainly on the scheduled charter services of Jetairfly, but Brussels Airlines expects to supplement demand through its strong European network from the Belgian capital with the flights scheduled to provide smooth connections to other European countries including France, Germany, UK, Italy, Scandinavia and Russia.

The airline is also to work with local tour operators to sell seat capacity on the weekly flights reducing its own risk on the new service. “We are pleased that the Belgian tourism group Thomas Cook / Neckermann/ Pegase will make use of this new scheduled flight to offer their customers the possibility to fly in comfort to Kenya,” it said in a statement.
