Berlin Brandenburg Offers Unique Opportunities
The new Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) finally opened about month ago. The new facilities and the Capital Region of Germany offer unique opportunities to passengers and visitors.
Market: Germany’s capital region offers new opportunities
Berlin is at the center of German politics, business and culture. The large catchment area of the Capital Region of Germany includes around 11 Million inhabitants within a 2-hour drive. As the largest city in Germany, 3.7 Million people live in Berlin.
But even more important is Berlin’s role as a destination. Being one of the top 3 city destination in Europe, Berlin attracts a huge number of visitors, national and international, leisure and business. Berlin is not just the capital of Germany, it is a vibrant city, full of history, culture and it is the number one start-up city in Germany.
Business in Berlin and the surrounding region are booming. Not only is Tesla building a Giga factory close to Berlin, but they have also decided to build the world’s largest battery plant. Other companies have already invested in the region or followed the likes of Microsoft and VW and have created an innovation hub in Berlin.
Berlin Brandenburg Airport – BER
In 2019 the airports in Berlin, Tegel and Schönefeld, together moved 35.6 million passengers. In fact, 95 airlines operated routes to 195 destinations. As this traffic was almost completely origin and destination (O&D) traffic, Berlin Airport is now the biggest O&D airport system in Germany. In total numbers Berlin is the third biggest airport operator in Germany.
The new infrastructure offers two independent runways, one 4 km long and the northern runway 3.6 km long. Operating hours of the airport are 5:30 am to 11:30 pm.
Three terminals are ready for operation – Terminal 1 is the main terminal in the midfield. North of it, Terminal 2 is ready to open once traffic demand returns. Terminal 5 is the former Berlin Schönefeld Airport terminal. Together these terminals offer increased capacity to meet future traffic demands.
A train station directly under the terminal ensures travellers can reach their end destination in Berlin or the surrounding areas, conveniently and relaxed. Regional trains, suburban trains and long distance trains offer convenient connection throughout the catchment areas. The city center of Berlin can be reached within 30 minutes. This train station will significantly improve the passenger experience at the airport by offering a convenient and comfortable way to reach their end destination.
