BAA must give up three airports

The UK’s Competition Commission has said BAA will have to sell Gatwick, Stansted and Edinburgh airports.

In a provisional report, the watchdog said it had made the decision in order to improve levels of service at UK airports, but said it might consider the alternative of Glasgow Airport instead of Edinburgh.

Colin Matthews chief executive of BAA, said the company was disappointed with the decision: "We do not believe that [the Commission] has set out compelling evidence to support its view that selling Stansted as well as Gatwick will increase competition and we remain concerned that its proposed remedies may actually delay the introduction of new runway capacity," he said.
