Athens International Airport (ATH) welcomed a record 31.9 million passengers in 2024, a 25% increase over 2019 levels and a 13% rise year-over-year. Growth has continued into 2025, with traffic up 7.6% in the first six months of the year.

Following strong gains in the U.S. market—where its network is expected to reach nine destinations by the end of 2025—ATH is seeking to expand further. O&D traffic between Athens and the U.S. rose 15% in the first half of 2025 compared with the same period last year.

Based on IATA AirportIS data, U.S. connecting traffic via ATH rose 155% in 2024 compared with pre-pandemic levels and climbed a further 45% in the first half of 2025 versus the same period a year earlier.

Los Angeles was ATH’s largest unserved route in 2024, generating 106,000 bi-directional O&D passengers. Norse Atlantic responded to this demand by launching a 4X-weekly Los Angeles service in June 2025, building on the success of its New York JFK–Athens flights introduced in 2024.

American Airlines has also announced a new Dallas-Fort Worth service beginning May 2026, while both American and Delta Air Lines have increased frequencies on existing routes to extend seasonal coverage. ATH has noted growing year-round appeal, with winter traffic volumes rising steadily.

San Francisco is now the top unserved U.S. market for ATH, with more than 70,000 bi-directional O&D passengers in 2024, followed by Miami with 23,800 one-way passengers. Denver and Seattle are also viewed as high-priority opportunities for future nonstop service.

As a member of Routes 360, the only digital platform dedicated to route development, ATH has uploaded multiple route opportunities to its profile, seeking to expand its transatlantic offering to meet strong demands.
