Airport Snapshot: São Paulo - Campinas Viracopos International Airport Plans To Hit Historic Passenger Milestone

The Brazilian airport discusses its remarkable air service development success story and reveals key markets for expansion during Routes World 2025 in Hong Kong.

In the first half of 2025, São Paulo - Campinas Viracopos International Airport (VCP) recorded a 6.52% increase in total passenger traffic, and a 10% growth in international flow. The airport is expected to hit a historic milestone of 13 million passengers by year’s end.

VCP’s growth can be partially attributed to Azul Airlines, which has transformed the airport into its primary operational hub. This summer alone, the airline launched two seasonal routes to Bariloche and Mandoza in Argentina, while strengthening European connectivity to Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) and Porto Airport (OPO).

The domestic landscape has equally contributed to success with LATAM Airlines returning to passenger operations and now offering 21 weekly services—a clear vote of confidence in VCP.

With capacity to double passenger numbers, Maria Fan, chief commercial officer at VCP, told Routes how international expansion is at the heart of the airport’s strategy. “Viracopos is the airport in São Paulo with the most capacity to expand in the years to come and cope with market growth. Only with new international destinations can we do that,” Fan disclosed during Routes World 2025 in Hong Kong.

To reach this goal, VCP plans to work with existing and new airline partners to fulfil key growth opportunities, particularly across EMEA and Asia. To showcase its capabilities, the airport has gained exceptional visibility through its Routes 360 membership.

“We joined Routes 360 last year and the platform has been exactly what we were looking for,” Fan explains. “They connect us with airlines worldwide and our profile has been consistently amongst the most viewed. We need to raise the awareness of Viracopos, and I think this platform is the quickest way to do that.”

Brazil’s São Paulo - Campinas Viracopos International Airport, located just 45 minutes from São Paulo, serves as a strategic hub for Latin America. Catering to a region with approximately three million residents and a wider catchment area of over 38 million, VCP offers a wealth of direct domestic and international routes across the Americas and Europe.
