Aerosur to Expand Widebody Fleet

Bolivian carrier Aerosur is to introduce a second Boeing 767-200 into its fleet within the second half of this year, according to a senior executive at the company. The airline acquired its first 767-200 last year and the arrival of a second will allow it to boost frequencies on many of its routes from Santa Cruz. These include destinations such as Miami and Sao Paulo, which are already served by the 767, and its new Washington Dulles service which is due to launch this month. The aircraft will also be used to launch a new weekly flight to Barcelona, supplementing the airline’s existing flights to Madrid, which are flown using a 747-400. There is no other operator currently offering service on the Santa Cruz – Barcelona route but Aerosur’s traffic data shows that in the year ending November 2010 more than 3,000 of the passengers on its Madrid service began or ended their journey in Barcelona. Almost 100,000 O&D passengers travelled between Spain and Bolivia in this period with 64 per cent of these using Aerosur’s flights.
