VietJet and its Thai subsidiary have become the latest airlines to commit to operating passenger services from the new Western Sydney International Airport (WSI).
VietJet intends to launch two weekly services between WSI and Ho Chi Minh City from Jan. 10, 2027, according to a statement from the airline and airport. A third weekly flight will be added in March 2027. The VietJet flights will be operated by the carrier’s Airbus A330s.
Joint venture carrier Thai VietJet also plans to launch four weekly flights between WSI and Bangkok in November 2027.
WSI began cargo operations on July 27, and passenger services are due to start on Oct. 25. Other airlines to commit to fly from WSI are Air New Zealand, Jetstar, Qantas and Singapore Airlines.
WSI will be VietJet’s fifth destination in Australia. The airport’s CEO noted that the Western Sydney area is home to more than half of the Greater Sydney region’s Vietnamese population of about 70,000 people.
The Ho Chi Minh City flights are supported by the New South Wales government through the Western Sydney International Takeoff Fund.
VietJet has big plans for the Australian market. It has applied for an air operator certificate (AOC) to establish a domestic carrier in Australia.
VietJet has already been granted slots at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport for the proposed domestic carrier, although these are conditional upon the AOC being approved.
