Emirates and Avianca have unveiled plans to launch a codeshare partnership as the Gulf carrier prepares to launch its first-ever passenger flights to Colombia.
Under the terms of the agreement, Avianca will place its code on Emirates-operated flights from Dubai International Airport (DXB) to Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN), London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Madrid Airport (MAD).
In turn, Emirates will place its code on Avianca’s services from Bogotá El Dorado Airport to BCN, LHR and MAD, as well as between Colombia's Cali, Medellin and MAD. The codeshare routes are effective from June 4.
“This collaboration will bring our region closer to Dubai via Europe and it will also strengthen Avianca’s operation in Barcelona, Madrid and London Heathrow,” says Claudio Vélez, Avianca's chief revenue officer.
The agreement comes ahead of Emirates’ first passenger flights to Colombia. From June 3, the carrier will offer daily flights from DXB to BOG, operating with a stop at Miami International Airport (MIA). The route will use Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.
Emirates has offered cargo service to Colombia in the past, flying freighters to Bogotá via Mexico City Juarez International Airport in 2019. However, the country has been absent from its passenger route map until now.
Colombia will become the third South American country served by Emirates for passenger flights, adding to existing operations in Rio de Janeiro Galeao, Brazil, and Buenos Aires Ministro Pistarini, Argentina.
The airline will introduce direct competition on the 1,511-mi. (1,313-nm) MIA-BOG sector, challenging American Airlines, Avianca and LATAM Airlines Group.
