AIA on the Rise: Athens Emerges as Europe's Fastest Growing Hub

Outside of airport building

Athens International Airport (AIA) continues its ascent as one of Europe’s most dynamic aviation gateways, building on its historic 2024 performance with another year of strong growth in 2025 and an equally promising outlook for 2026. After reaching an all‑time record of 31.85 million passengers in 2024 — a 13% increase over 2023 and 24.6% above 2019 — AIA further strengthened its position among Europe’s top‑performing airports.

This momentum continued throughout 2025, with full‑year traffic reaching 33.9 million passengers, up 6.7% from 2024. International traffic remained the main driver, rising 8.6% to 24.4 million passengers, while domestic traffic increased by 2.2% to 9.6 million. The continued recovery and expansion of long‑haul markets, combined with strong tourism and resilient O&D demand, underscore Athens’ growing global appeal.

Seasonality continued to improve, with the shoulder period and winter months delivering the highest growth rates of the year. Total flights increased by 5.7% to 283.6 thousand, foreign resident arrivals surged by 10.1% — adding nearly 800,000 additional passengers — and Greeks traveling abroad increased by 6.4%. These trends confirm Athens’ evolution into a truly year‑round destination, supported by strengthened airline capacity and an increasingly diversified network.

Network development in 2025 was among the most dynamic in AIA’s history. Five new airlines — Air Albania, Air Haifa, Sichuan Airlines, SkyUp and MedSky — joined the airport’s portfolio, while 18 new destinations were added, ranging from major long‑haul additions like Los Angeles (Norse Atlantic) and Charlotte (American Airlines) & Chengdu (Sichuan Airlines)  to new regional connections including amongst others Las Palmas, Baghdad, Benghazi, Sharm el Sheikh, Erbil, Luxor & Bratislava,. Even more, 13 new additional services were launched on existing routes by multiple carriers.

The outlook for 2026 is equally strong, with significant new additions already confirmed. American Airlines will launch direct flights between Dallas and Athens, further expanding the long-haul segment, while AirBaltic and Wizz Air will introduce new European connections from Tallinn and Gdansk respectively, with Wizz Air also adding services from Varna. Animawings, a new carrier to Athens, will connect Cluj and Timisoara with the Greek capital, while ATH Airport will also welcome TAP Portugal adding flights to Lisbon.

The Indian market will see a major breakthrough as Aegean Airlines and IndiGo launch direct services from Delhi and Mumbai, opening new opportunities in one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing outbound markets.

In total, the developments confirmed so far for 2026 include 11 new services, three additional frequencies on existing destinations, and the introduction of three new airlines to Athens.

These developments are supported by AIA’s comprehensive route development and airline marketing strategy. The airport offers one of Europe’s most extensive sets of non‑discriminatory incentive schemes, with 14 programs providing 3‑ to 5‑year discounts on aircraft and passenger‑related charges. Whether supporting new routes, enhancing seasonality, promoting fares, or encouraging off‑peak scheduling, AIA consistently delivers flexible, high‑value solutions that strengthen long‑term airline partnerships.

Sustainability remains central to AIA’s strategic vision. The airport’s ambitious “ROUTE 2025” initiative aiming for NetZero Carbon Emissions, completed by the end of 2025, through on‑site solar energy production, storage and self‑consumption — positioning AIA among the global leaders in airport sustainability.

AIA’s achievements have also earned global recognition. At ROUTES WORLD 2025, Athens International Airport was named the “Overall Winner,” prevailing among more than 2,500 aviation professionals and also winning the category for airports handling over 20 million passengers.

In every respect, Athens International Airport is not simply recovering — it is thriving. With record traffic levels, expanding global connectivity, a diversified route network, innovative airline partnerships and a firm commitment to sustainability, AIA is not just keeping pace with global aviation trends; it is helping shape the future of the industry.
