AACO calls upon the EU to replace its EU ETS with a global solution
The Arab Air Carriers Organisation, considers the application of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme on international aviation as extraterritorial application of national laws which raises serious questions about its legality, a matter which is now being looked at by the European Court of Justice as a result of a lawsuit lodged by the Air Transport Association of the USA.
AACO strongly believes that addressing aviation emissions should be based on the four pillar strategy adopted by all stakeholders in aviation. This strategy calls upon the mitigation of emissions through improvement of infrastructure, focus on technology advancements including the development of alternative energy sources, improvement in the operational measures of the airlines and lastly economic measures with revenues reinvested in the mitigation of aviation emissions.
AACO is urging the EU to reconsider their stance and to align with the framework formulated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.
Trying to impose a unilateral approach will only lead to conflict and will not lead to a better environment. "Aviation is a global business. The cause of the environment is also global. Therefore, the fight against climate change cannot be but global. Unilateral initiatives will not improve the environment." said Abdul Wahab Teffaha, Secretary General of AACO.
