In 2001 China accounted for 2% of commercial aircraft orders. By 2018 that had risen to 23%, and Chinese demand was a key driver of growth at Airbus, Boeing and western aviation suppliers. But as the Comac C919’s availability draws closer, could a deterioration of relations between Beijing and the West prompt China’s authoritarian leaders to curtail aircraft imports?
