China has launched another three astronauts into space as construction of the Tiangong space station enters its next phase. Chen Dong, Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe lifted off on Shenzhou-14 atop a Long March-2F launch vehicle from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center at 10:44 a.m. local time June 5. Boeing has released concepts of two different, carrier-compatible missiles—one powered by a dual-combustion scramjet and the other by a high-supersonic ramjet—for the first time. The HyFly II scramjet and the Supersonic Propulsion Enabled Advanced Ramjet (SPEAR) programs moved forward in late 2020 based on a common capability: Unlike the two-stage, scramjet-powered Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile (HACM) in development by the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy needs a long-range, high-speed missile that fits on a carrier’s weapons elevators and will not scrape the deck during landings. Repaired SLS Returns To Launchpad For Tanking Test

NASA’s first Space Launch System (SLS) Moon rocket is back at Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39B for a fourth attempt to test fueling operations ahead of launch on the Artemis I uncrewed flight test around the Moon. The behemoth booster, which has been in development for a decade, was rolled out from the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) shortly after midnight on June 6 and reached the launchpad about 8 hr. later. UK Transferring M270 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems To Ukraine

The UK is giving some of its M270 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems to Ukraine as the country seeks longer range systems to target heavy artillery in its war with Russia. The UK Ministry of Defense said on June 6 that the transfers—conducted in coordination with U.S., from which the systems were originally acquired—will also come with M31A1 munitions. Germany Plans New Helos, More P-8s From Special Defense Fund

Germany is planning to purchase utility helicopters and enlarge its Boeing P-8 Poseidon fleet with €100 billion ($107 billion) from its special defense modernization fund. Some €30 billion of the €82 billion so far allocated will be spent on aerospace programs, according to documentation revealed by the German Parliament on June 3 after the lawmakers enacted the fund into law. Australia, Canada Say China Fighters Harassing Their Patrol Aircraft

The Australian and Canadian governments say Chinese fighters have intercepted and harassed their maritime patrol aircraft, with one Chinese aircraft releasing chaff that was ingested into the engines of a Royal Australia Air Force (RAAF) P-8 Poseidon. The Australian Defense Department says that on May 26 a People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) Shenyang J-16 intercepted its P-8 as it was carrying out “routine maritime surveillance activity” in international airspace over the South China Sea.
