Space-Based Medical Technology Competition Launched

Boryung Pharmaceutical, Starburst and Axiom Space have launched a “Care in Space Challenge,” an annual competition with a $1 million shared prize to find next-generation pharmaceutical, bioscience and medical technologies to be developed in space. The competition is also seeking technologies that will support human health during prolonged spaceflight, the companies said on April 18. Credit: Axiom Space

NASA To Suspend SLS Tanking Test And Roll Back To VAB

NASA plans to suspend additional tanking tests of the Space Launch System (SLS) and return the Moon rocket to Kennedy Space Center’s Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) for repairs, the space agency said. The decision announced on April 16 to roll back the SLS from Launch Complex 39B came the day after NASA said it was hoping for a quick resolution to a hydrogen leak that halted a third tanking attempt on April 14. Manufacturers Line Up To Replace Latin America’s UH-1 Hueys

Bell’s UH-1 Huey, the iconic helicopter of the Vietnam War era, operates in almost all Latin American countries across their air forces, armies and navies. The nations operate at least 170 versions of the Huey, a number that increases by 55%, or 95 aircraft, counting the Bell 212 and 412 models. Credit: Bell Helicopter

Spacewalkers Provide ISS European Robot Arm With Control Panel

Spacewalking cosmonauts Oleg Artemyev and Denis Matveev equipped the European Space Agency’s (ESA) 37-ft.-long robot arm with a control panel during an April 18 spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS). The robot arm is part of the latest Russian-launched Nauka Multipurpose Laboratory and Prichal multiport docking module additions to the ISS. Credit: NASA

Ukraine Inflicts Heavy Helicopter Losses On Russia

Russia has suffered heavy helicopter losses in Ukraine. By early April, Russia had lost more than 20 helicopters in the air and about 10 others were destroyed on the ground by artillery or uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) fire. These figures only include visually confirmed cases, which means the actual number of losses is higher. Credit: Kamov

Axiom-1 Space Station Departure, Splashdown Delayed by Weather

NASA, SpaceX and Axiom Space have delayed the undocking of Axiom-1 (AX-1), the first U.S. private astronaut mission to the International Space Station (ISS), from April 19 to April 20 at the earliest. The delay is due to predicted unfavorable weather conditions at prospective splashdown sites in the waters off the Florida coast. Credit: NASA

Space SPAC Redwire To Raise $80 Million For M&A, Costs

Space manufacturing and services provider Redwire, which recently became a publicly traded company, could raise up to $80 million in new funds via additional stock issuance. Proceeds would go to mergers and acquisitions, but also to support the startup’s business costs. Credit: Redwire

Shenzhou-13 Returns To Earth Following Landmark Mission

The three Chinese astronauts on the Shenzhou-13 mission have returned to Earth after 183 days in orbit, setting a Chinese spaceflight record. No thanks. Will never get me to ride in one of those things. I've done a lot of flying electric R/C models and battery shorts can lead to fires and electronic failures with emotors can lead to falling out of the sky at least that appears to be the case with some of these designs. Me? motor failure leads to me remotely gliding back with wings to allow me to troubleshoot, fix and be able to fly the model again. Kurt
