SINGAPORE—ST Engineering is gearing up to begin testing its AirFish wing-in-ground technology vehicle with the goal of starting service before yearend.

“We are making good progress on certifying this aircraft,” said Kevin Chow, ST Engineering's executive vice president and head of Aerostructures and Systems, on the eve of Singapore Airshow. Key elements of the first vehicle are now coming together, he told reporters.

ST Engineering expect flight trials to begin in the second quarter, Chow added.

During Singapore Airshow the company plans to disclose a number of user partnerships, Chow said. Among them is a ferry operator with whom ST Engineering hopes to begin carrying passengers in Singapore in the third quarter, he added.

The company two years ago disclosed it had teamed with Bureau Veritas, a testing and certification company, to validate the design. The design is for a 10-seater vehicle that uses aerodynamic forces to travel above the water.

The vehicle is designed for a cruise speed of 100 kt. and a range of 300 nm. It should be able to take off and land in Sea State 3 and 15 kt. wind speeds, the company has said.

“There still a bit of work to do on the certification, the flight trials,” Chow added.

ST Engineering also has promoted the concept for military use as a troop carrier or medical evacuation transport with an extended range of up to 1,000 nm.
