Tests and approvals from a single source: New labs at Lufthansa Technik
Lufthansa Technik AG is investing considerably into research and innovation as part of an ongoing investment program. To further enhance its future development activities, it recently opened a completely new chemistry lab, which has been integrated with the existing metallurgy lab in a new building at the Lufthansa Technik home base in Hamburg. With these facilities, the company has new capabilities at its disposal for comprehensive testing and materials research for the development of aircraft cabin products.
One of the new capabilities is a fire safety lab. From fabric cushions in economy class and fine leather upholstery in business class to noble wood veneer, golden applications or fluffy carpeting in private VIP jets, the selection of materials that can be installed inside an aircraft cabin is extremely diverse. But not everything that makes life pleasant on board is also suitable for installation in an aircraft from a fire safety standpoint, so all materials used on board an aircraft have to undergo testing of their flame retardant characteristics. Lufthansa Technik performs such tests in its own fire safety lab in Hamburg.
Dr. Christian Siry, Head of Central Materials Technology at Lufthansa Technik, says: "For aircraft cabins in particular, ever shorter innovation cycles make it important to be able to understand and assess materials and their relationships down to the last detail. Only with this knowledge is it possible for engineering to develop solutions for our customers and produce them in our own workshops in the shortest possible time. In connection with the required certification processes, the labs and the specialists in Central Materials Technology also provide crucial ideas and save a lot of time, which is very important in view of the multistage iterative processes that are often needed. The investment in the new facilities gives us many more capabilities than we previously had."
The graduated engineer Dr. Christian Siry will be at the Lufthansa Technik stand (Hall B6, Stand 6B80) at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg at 14 and 15 April.
