The USAF is set to kick off an analysis of alternatives for a future airlifter to replace the Boeing C-17 and Lockheed Martin C-5, but the familiar study will be conducted completely differently.

The USAF needs to press forward on modernizing its airlift fleet after being too slow on progress to replace its C-17 and C-5 fleet, a top official argues.

The first aircraft could be produced as early as fiscal 2038.

This year, that operational requirement comes as the U.S. Air Force also undergoes a large-scale overhaul of its force structure.

The service seeks shift from one-for-one replacement of KC-135s and C-17s to a series of aircraft, from the basic to the exquisite.
