Australia’s competition watchdog has given interim approval for a limited codeshare between Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand.

Qantas said the decision to end the JBA was due to the draft rejection of the extension by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in September.

The decision follows Australia’s competition regulator announcing its formal opposition to the proposed tie-up between Qantas and Alliance in April 2023.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission intends to reject a one-year extension sought by Qantas and China Eastern over frequency and growth concerns.

The allegations relate to more than 8,000 canceled flights between May and July 2022.

The airline has pledged to work with regulators to address competition concerns over its deal to buy Alliance and announced the launch of a route to Tonga.

Interim approval has been given for the codeshare agreement, which replaces Virgin Australia’s long-standing relationship with Delta Air Lines.

Qantas said it plans to cancel the launch of a Cairns-Tokyo route following the decision.
