Business & Commercial Aviation News from July 1965

Jessica A. Salerno July 21, 2015

Fliper, from July 1965 issue of Business & Commercial Aviation

A new helicopter firm, Fliper Corp., San Ramon, California, will design and develop a new model. Released data is scanty, only that the plane will go about 125 mph, have a range of 4 hr. plus reserves and feature easy handling characteristics.

BAC 111, from July 1965 issue of Business & Commercial Aviation

Ahead on delivery timetable,  BAC 111 will be the first of super business jets, with number one set for delivery to Tennessee Gas Transmission Co., this fall. Page Airways is the distributor for this continent. Meanwhile, BAC 111 is adding up flight hours as short-haul jet for Braniff, Mohawk and Pan Am airlines.

Fan Jet Falcon, from July 1965 issue of Business & Commercial Aviation

Pan Am Business Jet’s million-dollar Fan Jet Falcon was the highlight of the Reading Air Show. Just flown over from France, the biz jet was making its first public appearance in the U.S. That fact was also an unmistakable sign of the import of Reading in the business aviation industry.

Aero Commander’s first turboprop is bound to keep the company’s Bethany, Oklahoma, plant bustling with some 96 units now on order, representing $27 million in sales. Lures of the Turbo Commander are many: 285 mph cruise (at 16,500 ft.) with a range of 1,100 mi. block-to-block with 45-min. reserve; cabin pressurization of 4.0 psi; and the ability to carry ten passengers, fly about 30,000 ft., climb 2,000 fpm and clear a 50-ft. obstacle in 2,000 ft. at full gross weight.

Chevron Advertisement, from July 1965 issue of Business & Commercial Aviation

The photo in this Chevron ad is a 1958 Cessna 182A (N5078D) on a deer count in the Sierra Nevada. Frank Liming at Reno Flying Service said, “at 909 hours since the last major [overhaul] wear on the original unchromed cylinders was negligible. I’m convinced with continued use of compound 'RPM' the crank will last 5,000 hours. . . . ”

The July 1965 issue of Business & Commercial Aviation included these news items as well as the aircraft in the image gallery:

  • "It wasn't long after B&CA was born that we began to get the feeling that we were the best magazine in the growing field of business aviation. In those eight years we've become convinced. Our convictions haven't changes." - David W. Ewald, Publisher
  • The NBAA convention set for Oct. 12-14 in Los Angeles has already sold out 90% of planned 115 booths to 80 exhibitors. Booths, forums and skull-to-skull sessions will be held at L.A.'s giant Ambassador Hotel; airplanes will be at Burbank on Pacific Airmotive's side of the field.
  • Cessna Aircraft is producing one airplane per 23 minutes (of 8 hr. working day), about 20 units a day. After third record-breaking month, it is almost "ho, hum" to announce that May's 422 civil aircraft delivered was the company's all-time high for any May.
  • Beach-buzzing by light planes has become a problem in southern California, and life guards have been told to note identification numbers of aircraft flying low. FAA warns minimum altitude regulations will be enforced.
