BEHIND THE SCENES  Steve Trimble, Aviation Week defense editor, flew in the back seat of a Saab-owned JAS 39D Gripen fighter on a supersonic, 45-min. flight over the Baltic Sea during his visit to Saab headquarters in Linkoping, Sweden, Nov. 29. Martin Donaldsson, a Saab test pilot, flew in the front seat. The flight took place nearly three weeks before the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration announced a new upgrade program for the JAS 39C/D fleet.
