Today, ITP Aero is an independent global company, since Bain Capital took ownership of ITP Aero in September 2022, focused on its proprietary technology and industrial growth plan, expanding its facilities and global industrial footprint, both in the commercial and defence markets.    

Initiatives driving the future of aviation 

The evolutionary technological progress in commercial aviation to date have been of great importance, mainly focused on reducing the carbon footprint of platforms and engines.  In this sense, ITP Aero has played a key role as a Tier 1 in shaping the most efficient engine programmes and is currently taking steps towards further diversifying its customer portfolio.  

Within the single aisle segment, ITP Aero participates as a risk and revenue sharing partner (RRSP) in Pratt & Whitney's GTF™ engine programme, developing the quietest, greenest and most efficient engine family for single-aisle aircraft, with more than 1,300 aircraft in service and more than 15 million engine flight hours to date. In addition, this engine family offers leading-edge sustainability benefits such as up to 75% reduction in noise emissions, up to 50% reduction in NOx emissions and up to 20% reduction in CO2 emissions.

In double aisle, ITP Aero is also a RRSP for the entire Rolls-Royce Trent engine family, a long-standing partnership between the two companies that started more than 30 years ago. As a result, ITP Aero’s turbines power more than half of the world's twin-aisle aircraft. Another key milestone of this partnership is the design, manufacture, assembly and delivery of the first intermediate pressure turbine for Rolls-Royce’s UltraFan demosntrator, which has recently gone through its first test bench tests running on 100% sustainable aviation fuel.  UltraFan will enable a substantial reduction in specific fuel consumption of 25% compared to traditional engines and 10% compared to other recent models.

However, the current challenges towards an even greater reduction in fuel consumption, emissions and noise will be achieved with the development of, above all, disruptive technologies that will be key to decarbonising aviation in the next decade.

ITP Aero's key role in the decarbonisation of aviation

In addition to optimising the propulsive efficiency of leading engines in the aviation industry, ITP Aero is also involved in the development of tomorrow’s carbon-free flights, based on the conviction that the future of aviation lies in the pursuit of alternative propulsion systems, excellence in manufacturing technologies and digitalisation.

In this context, ITP Aero is leading a consortium of companies, technology centres and universities that is developing a hydrogen-powered aircraft engine. As part of this pioneering project, ITP Aero is designing and building a unique open air test bench to carry out the first tests on this engine in 2025.  

ITP Aero is also laying the grounds of hybrid electric propulsion technology through other initiatives, leading different consortiums of companies, technology centres and leading universities. These ground-breaking projects prove that the proprietary technologies developed by ITP Aero have a key role to play in the decarbonisation of aviation, and are endorsed by the recent “Gold medal” earned by the company in EcoVadis’ 2023 sustainability rating and its commitment to become net zero by 2050.
