Gallery: Cutting-Edge Technology At JFK Airport's New Terminal One
November 14, 2024Slated to open in June 2026, John F. Kennedy International Airport’s New Terminal One will follow in the modernization footsteps of nearby LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. Construction on the new terminal, containing 23 international gates and occupying 2.6 million ft.2, began in 2022.
Private investors and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have provided more than $19 billion in funds for the transformation of JFK, the centerpiece of which will be the New Terminal One. Much of this investment went toward “cutting-edge tech to ensure a 21st-century, world-class experience for our customers,” Hersh Parekh, deputy chief of intergovernmental affairs at the Port Authority, said at a media event in Bohemia, New York, in mid-October.
SITA and several of its collaborating partners, including Schneider Electric and ADB Safegate, hosted the event. They demonstrated multiple companies’ technologies, such as biometric scanning and machine-learning artificial intelligence, which will be used to create a “seamless passenger experience,” according to New Terminal One Chief Information Officer Serge Yonke Nguewo.
The technology includes end-to-end passenger touchpoint systems affecting boarding, luggage handling, and disembarkation. The New Terminal One will also feature apron management systems and inset lights for aprons and taxiways, affecting safety, carbon emissions, and holding times, according to Corey Stutz, director of segment marketing at ADB Safegate. New airside technology at JFK will include a virtual airport control room, multiple cameras positioned around the terminal to increase situational awareness and an Integrated Controller Working Position that allows a controller to see the whole airport at a glance.
