Caribbean low-cost carrier REDJet is set to launch a twice weekly link between Barbados and St Maarten as it expands its budget airline model into new markets across the region. The airline has confirmed it has received approval from the authorities to launch a twice weekly service on the route and is expected to formalise its launch schedule over the coming two weeks with a tentative March launch.
Since its launch in May last year REDJet has expanded its network to cover six routes. It now offers flights to six destinations after introducing St Lucia’s to its route map in December 2011 and adding to its existing links to Antigua, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad. According to the airline’s chief executive officer, Ian Burns, St Maarten is a destination that the airline has received numerous requests from the travelling public to serve.
“This represents another key milestone in REDJet's plan to deliver the lowest fares, reliable service and accessible travel across the region,” he said. “We are very excited to service this new market that will open up many opportunities for shopping and entertainment for which St Maarten is famous."
The new REDJet service will be the only current direct link non-stop link between Barbados and St Maarten. In the past year an estimated 6,500 O&D passengers travelled between the two locations with the majority connecting in Antigua on the flights of regional operator LIAT.
