European Parliament gives FABs go ahead

The European Parliament has given the go ahead to the merger of national airspaces into Functional Airspace Blocks (FABs) as part of its efforts to reduce carbon emissions and congestion.

Initially nine FABs will be set up to include the national airspaces of Belgium, France, Germany in an effort to organise air traffic management efficiently, irrespective of national borders.

The Association of European Airlines (AEA) welcomed the move with secretary general Ulrich Schulte-Strathaus commenting: “Now we have the regulatory framework falling into place, it is imperative that work begins on the organisational and operational aspects of the FABs without delay. There is no reason why the FABs should not be up and running within three years, and we would like to see binding targets to make sure this happens”.
