Boston Logan Airport domestic analysis

Low cost operator Jetblue has announced a significant expansion from its base at Boston Logan Airport. The A320 and E-190 operator has announced new services which will mean a 30% ramp up in its flights from the North East Airport. Amongst the new routes annnounced are;

  • New scheduled service to Montego Bay
  • Significant increases in capacity to San Francisco, Washington Dulles and Charlotte NC.

US Airways is still the largest domestic and near International player at Boston. At the start of November, US operates 1177 weekly flights, however Jetblue is now the second largest carrier in terms of seat capacity, 118200 weekly seats, in terms of flights American Airlines and Delta still operate more flights, however their smaller aircraft types in certain markets mean that Jetblue offers more weekly capacity.

Boston is now the second largest base for Jetblue after its main JFK base. From JFK Jetblue operates some 2077 weekly flights which equates to 25% of all its departures, wheras Boston with 798 weekly departures accounts for 8.6% of all departures in the Jetblue network.

Jetblue shows no sign of slowing down its growth at Boston, and in week where the carrier firmed up plans for a codeshare with european giant Lufthansa the future looks bright for Jetblue. Lufthansa itself operates 27 weekly flights to Boston from its Munich and Frankfurt hubs and Jetblue will allow access to LH passengers to over 30 destinations from Boston.
