Airline Profile: Astraeus Airlines

Astraeus Airlines, which primarily operates from London Gatwick, overhauled its business model in 2008 and now mainly operates on an ACMI (aircraft, crew, maintenance, insurance) basis for other carriers. It will undertake dry, wet or damp leases and also has an 'ad hoc' department.

Fleet

Astraeus Airlines' current fleet consists of two B737-700s and five B757-200s. In 2008, Astraeus Airlines gained its IOSA registration and a worldwide AOC (WWAOC). It operates both fleet types in an ETOPS configuration.

Network Strategy

As well as providing capacity for airlines, Astraeus is looking for opportunities to work alongside airports and their tourism authorities to establish new airlines in unserved or underserved markets, as Astraeus has done by establishing Iceland Express in Reykjavik.

This concept gives airports (or anyone interested), together with their tourism authority and tour operators the opportunity to establish their own airline without the complexities and the start-up costs.

Astraeus is able to provide immediate operational capacity and the Iceland Express concept can be transported to deliver a locally branded version of the sales and marketing function.

The Iceland Express Case Study

Iceland Express is an Icelandic provider of classic low-cost flying, based in Keflavik. It operates to key cities and some leisure destinations in Europe.

The product is distributed from its offices both phone and Internet and its aim is to offer the best value priced seats in its market at the lowest price point.

The whole operation is branded in Iceland Express livery and all conditions are provided by Iceland Express.

To enable the maximum economic benefit of the LCC model, the aircraft used are provided by Astraeus Airlines. This allows Iceland Express to fine tune its capacity requirements across seasons and peak periods with Astraeus Airlines fluctuating the number of aircraft provided. All ground arrangements and on board products are provided and delivered by Iceland Express.

Astraeus Airlines is part of Route Exchange on Routesonline and wishes to hear from airports wishing to fill unserved markets at their destination. Astraeus will also be attending Routes CIS and The World Route Development Forum in Vancouver to brief airports on the opportunities that it can provide.
