CFM56-5C engine powering a Lufthansa operated A340 aircraft has become the first of the engine type to pass the 100,000 flight hour threshold.

The engine became operational at Lufthansa Passage in November 1993 and was first used on an A340-200 aircraft.

After the aircraft was sold in 2004, it flew on an A340-300.

Lufthansa Technik said the engine has undergone four full overhauls over the course of its 23-year career.

Bernhard Krueger-Sprengel, head of engine services at Lufthansa Technik, said the milestone demonstrated “the outstanding ability” of the CFM56 engine.
