Designed to combine jet speed with intercontinental range, the B-52 was not only important in itself but accelerated the development of commercial jet aircraft—its aerodynamic and propulsion technology, and the need for a large jet tanker to support it, led to the Boeing 367-80, the prototype for the modern airliner.
