European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) officials have signed off on the PowerJet SaM146 1S18 turbofan, clearing a hurdle for long-range operations of the Sukhoi Superjet 100.

The upgrade provides 16,100 lb. of thrust and comes about 18 months after the baseline powerplant received EASA approval. PowerJet, the joint venture of Snecma and NPO Saturn, says the new version increases the Superjet’s range to 2,470 nm at full passenger load. No aircraft changes are associated with the powerplant upgrade.

PowerJet says that since entry-in-service, the engine has topped 99% dispatch reliability.
