Aviation Week & Space Technology, March 16: Airline Mergers

The special feature on airline mergers analyzes the industry's state in the various regions. Europe and Latin America have recently been the most active regions in terms of airline consolidation. International Airlines Group (IAG) is trying to buy Aer Lingus, IAG itself now has a new shareholder in Qatar Airways. But many other airlines in Europe are desperately looking for investors and don't find interest. Other mergers like the Air France-KLM tie-up are under scrutiny because structural issues remained unadressed. In Latin America, two big groups have emerged. In the U.S. following the formation of the big three groups consolidation may still take place on a smaller scale and in Asia only few initiatives can be observed.
