Russia’s Rosoboronexport will showcase an improved Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A heavy-lift transport aircraft at the Aero India 2013 show, which opens in Bengaluru on Feb. 6.

An upgraded version of the 40-year-old Il-76MD, the-90A (also known as the Il-476) will be vying for space with Boeing’s C-17 Globemaster III military transport, which will be on aerial and static display. On Jan. 29, a prototype Ilyushin-90A  completed its first prolonged test flight.

According manufacturer Aviastar, the Il-76MD-90A is designed for inter-regional transportation of troops, large vehicles and cargo, as well as parachute drops of personnel and cargo. It also can be fitted for medevac and firefighting missions. The Il-76MD-90A is equipped with a new wing, PS-90A turbofan engines and a glass cockpit that allows a two-person flight crew. The maximum payload is 52 tons and the maximum takeoff weight is 210 tons.

Aviastar says the aircraft can operate from unpaved and paved airfields at altitudes up to 3,000 meters (9,800 ft.).

Meanwhile, Rosoboronexport, which is part of the Russian Technologies State Corp. and the sole Russian state intermediary responsible for defense exports, says it also will present the Yakovlev Yak-130 combat trainer; Il-78MK-90 tanker; Beriev Be-200 multipurpose amphibious vehicle; and these helicopters: the Mil Mi-35M and Mi-26T2, and Kamov Ka-31 and Ka-226T. Also expected are several other new samples from the Russian aircraft industry, including training aids and airborne weapons.

Russian aircraft have proven popular in the Asia-Pacific region. India’s Republic Day Parade 2012 started with a flyover by the newest Mi-17V-5 military transport helicopters. They carried the national flag and those from Indian armed forces. Rosoboronexport Deputy Director Viktor Komardin called this participation “clear evidence of India’s strong confidence in Russian aviation equipment.”

Russia also will showcase systems for protecting military installations, administrative and political centers, and critical infrastructure: the Antey-2500 air defense missile system, Tor-M2E and Buk-M2E surface-to-air missile systems, Pantsir-S1 air defense system and Igla-S shoulder-fired missile system
