India and Israel will jointly develop a long-range, surface-to-air missile.

India’s state-owned Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) have agreed to develop the LRSAM. BEL will function as the lead integrator and produce subsystems for the missile.

“IAI will act as a design authority and produce subsystems as our main subcontractor,” BEL Marketing Director H.N. Ramakrishna says.

IAI has been engaged in joint development programs over the years with the state-run Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and other defense industries for the Indian air force and navy, including joint manufacturing of subsystems.

“We see IAI as a strategic partner with a wide range of potential joint activities. The agreement demonstrates that we can work on the most sophisticated and advanced programs for mutual benefit,” Ramakrishna says.

Joseph Weiss, President and CEO of IAI, says “BEL is a strategic partner for us and we hope this cooperation will expand to other areas of interest.”
