Helicopters has completed Afghanistan theater modifications to German army Tiger attack helicopters.
The Afghanistan Stabilization German Army Rapid Deployment (Asgard) upgrade began in 2012 as the German army was preparing to send EC665 Tigers to Afghanistan to support coalition troops working in the country’s north.
Airbus, then, was charged with retrofitting 12 Tigers in three batches of four aircraft to prepare them for theater operations. The modifications included the fitting of engine sand filters and additional ballistic protection, along with the installation of a mission data recorder and enhanced communication equipment for improved interoperability in multinational missions.
The first Asgard-equipped Tigers began operational missions in Afghanistan in December 2012. The German army’s Asgard Tigers have accumulated more than 1,000 flight hours, with a significant proportion carried out in Afghanistan, Airbus says.
