Qatar Airways has selected Engine Alliance GP7200 turbofans to power its Airbus A380s.

The win for the General Electric/Pratt & Whitney joint venture continues its success in the Middle East, where Emirates and Etihad also opted for the engine. It adds to the JV’s lead over the rival Rolls-Royce Trent 900 in total number of A380 powerplants ordered.

Qatar is due to receive its first A380 next year. It has 10 A380s on order after doubling its commitment to the type in November during the Dubai air show.

The airline was late in making its engine decision. Airbus urges airlines make a selection at least 24 months before first delivery.
