As aircraft and engine fleets mature, one of the biggest values that MRO providers supply is cost-effective options to keep old parts airworthy. Often, repairs are cheaper than buying new (though there are cases where new parts can yield more savings from a lifecycle cost standpoint--such as when they help keep engines on-wing longer).
Here is one example of a cost-saving fix developed by Air France Industries / KLM Engineering & Maintenance. It is a CF6 turbine rear frame patch repair using electron beam welding--and a printed plastic test part to verify the CAD rendering is accurate before the patch is machined.
