Here are a few highlights so far from Aviation Week's MRO Asia Conference & Exhibition, which is taking place in Singapore:
1. Josephine Teo senior minister of state for Singapore, says MRO growth here in Singapore has outpaced the global average and that the Singapore government will continue to help aviation aftermarket companies by expanding the country's infrastructure, accelerating manpower development and supporting productivity advances.
2. Lim Ser Ghee, ST Aerospace COO, challenged conference attendees to figure out strategies to support next-gen aircraft, which won't require as much maintenance. He posed this interesting question: Will maintenance checks become more equalized so MROs will provide lighter checks, almost on-demand, at major airports where customers fly but the MRO doesn't have a base facility?
3. Galleys used to last an aircraft lifetime but now they're replaced about every five years, says Mark Hayman, HAECO group director engineering and operations. This is indictive of how freqently cabins now need to be refreshed.
4. Phil Seymour of IBA asked a panelist whether the engine market is really an open market.
5. Daniel Wong, Tigerair director, group procurement and fleet engineering, says Tiger looks for MROs that can grow in tandem with them, which given the fast paced expansion of this airline, is key. He also says it's important to make sure MROs have the financial resources to accomplish this.
6. Mega Maldives Airlines CEO and owner George Weinmann, discussed the challenges of being able to move aircraft in and out of China for maintenance given regulatory hurdles. FYI, he's looking fo a creative inflight entertainment upgrade for his aircraft!
