Last year, the Airplane Manufacturing Pilots Association (AMPA), which represents 104 pilots in Boeing’s Flight Standards and Simulator Instructor positions at the Boeing Flight Services’ training facility near Seattle, affiliated with the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, Local 2001.
Speea, which also represents engineers and technical workers at Boeing Commercial Airplanes in four Western states, says it was shocked on Mar. 28 during negotiations for its first contract on behalf of AMPA.
“Negotiators for Flight Services informed our team the company intends to eliminate Flight Services and Simulator Instructor pilot positions and will not offer to relocate these existing pilots to Miami,” the union says.
Speea estimates that only 30 of AMPA’s 104 members will be directly affected by the move to Miami.
“We will support AMPA with the full strength of our union,” says Speea President Tom McCarty. “We have 25,000 members who are in solidarity with AMPA. Whatever you decide, we’ll be there.”They may be in solidarity, but the new four-year contract they recently concluded contains a no-strike clause.
The story broke late Thursday and Boeing has not yet responded for a request for comment.
Things have been tense between Speea and Boeing since talks began on that contract last year, so tense that Boeing asked for federal mediation.
