German chancellor Angela Merkel was selected as Aviation Week & Space Technology's Person of the Year for 2012, a feature (not award) that spotlights the person we thought had a major impact on the aerospace, defense or airline industries in a given year, for better or worse. Merkel was picked for her role in squashing the proposed mega-merger of EADS and BAE Systems, a tie-up that would have created the world's largest A&D company.
