FL Technics CEO Jonas Butautis cited TeamSAI data here at MRO Asia today saying only 33% of line maintenance is outsourced, compared to 77% for heavy maintenance. He thinks part of the reason the line maintenance percentage is so low is partly due to organizational politics and unionization. "It can be hard to make socially unacceptable decisions," he says.
However, Butautis thinks outsourcing line maintenance can save airlines 20-30% of their line costs. For instance, he mentioned talking to an airline about outsourcing line maintenance in Cyprus, where this operator employs 200 people. FL Technics thinks it could do the same job, with the same performance metrics, with 60 people. Did FL Technics win the customer? No. At the end of the day, he says the airline told him "we can't fire 200 people."
He also thinks "technical people's egos drive some line maintenance decisions." In other words, the attitude of others cannot do it as well as me seems to come up.
