It’s a matter of job classifications, Boeing says of what’s happening to the new members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (Speea) who may be shuffled at the company’s Longacres Flight Services training facility.
Yesterday, I blogged about Speea sounding the alarm that Boeing will “eliminate” instructor pilot positions at Longacres after the facility closes to customer pilot training sometime this summer. Boeing is shifting its U.S.-based pilot training to its Miami center.
“We do not have open positions for those classifications at the Flight Services training campus in Miami,” Boeing says it told Speea negotiators on Thursday. “We are committed to do whatever we can to find equivalent positions either in the Puget Sound area or elsewhere at Boeing.”
So, the company is saying the shift does not necessarily mean a loss of (union) jobs in Puget Sound.
But the result is that the union positions will not be offered at its Miami facility because Florida is a right-to-work state.
Boeing says 33 simulator instructors and five standard pilots are affected; Speea counts 36 simulator instructors and five standard pilots. Either way it is about a third of the 104 Speea members working at Longacres.
