Vietnam Airlines appears to have a strong hold on Danang Airport, the country’s third largest.

Nearly all the flights to this airport, on Vietnam’s central coast, are served by Vietnam Airlines or Jetstar Pacific, a Vietnamese low-cost carrier in which Vietnam Airlines bought a 70% stake last month. Besides these two, there are very few flights by other carriers. Asiana Airlines and Korean Airlines recently launched services to Danang. AirAsia of Malaysia and Singapore Airline’s Silkair also have a few flights a week. And there some charter flights to Danang, mostly by Chinese and Taiwanese carriers.

Vietnam Airlines controls many of the service companies at the airport. Danang only has one ground handler and one firm supplying aircraft fuel, say the officials, adding that Vietnam Airlines owns both.

Danang Airport also only has one airline catering company, MAC’s Danang Airport Service Joint Stock Co., they say, adding that Vietnam Airlines has shares in this joint-stock company. No shares are held by the general public, they add.
