Lufthansa plans to deploy its new Boeing 747-8 on the Frankfurt-Washington route, starting June 1, with six weekly flights. The airline is set to take delivery of four more of the 20 747-8s it has on order before the end of the summer. The four will be assigned to New Delhi, Bangalore, Chicago and Los Angeles routes. Five more of the type are due to be delivered in 2013-15.

With the airline intending to keep capacity flat this year and grow only marginally in the next two years, it will be phasing out its fleet of 29 Boeing 747-400s. The carrier’s oldest -400 was recently sold for scrap, and five more are scheduled to follow this year.

Lufthansa is one of three airlines that has placed orders for the 747-8. Korean Air bought five units and Arik Air (Nigeria) purchased two.
