has finalized a $3.9 billion order for 12 widebody aircraft, the bulk of which was announced at this year’s Paris air show in June.
The order adds another 787 to the deal, but most importantly for Boeing’s dwindlingbacklog confirms an additional batch of five passenger models of the type. The deal also includes six . Boeing says Korean’s order backlog for 747-8s and 777-300ERs now stands at 10 each, while the additional 787 order increases the airline’s commitment for the new twinjet to 11.
Korean has already taken delivery of three 747-8Fs, with four more on order. The total number of 747-8s ordered by KAL now stand at 17, making it the second-largest 747-8 customer after launch airline.
Korean Air is the only carrier to order both the passenger and freighter variations of the 747-8. The airline, which currently operates 90 Boeing passenger and 27 freighter aircraft, also became the first international carrier to simultaneously operate both the 747-8 and 777 Freighter.
Korean has a vested interest in adding to the orderbook for both the 747-8 and 787, as the airline’s Aerospace Division supplies the raked wing-tips for each model.
